Customer gets a bad odor coming out of the floor drain, in the back room. There was no odor I could smell, today. They said they put water down the drain, from time to time, and the bad odor goes away. They were asking if anything else could be done. I told them a trap primer could be installed but the floor and wall would need to be opened up. If there was a crawl space to get into, we could avoid opening up the floor. Other than that, pouring water or a light harmless oil (mineral oil because it doesn’t evaporate) down the drain will refill the trap and prevent the sewer gas from coming in the building.

Just a reminder for next time: ensure that the main valve leading to the backflow preventer is closed before blowing out any excess water. This ensures that no water remains trapped in the valve, which can prevent issues like cracks from occurring.
